EDITORIAL ILLUSTRATION:

A BA project; two illustrations created for an online magazine featuring an article about tests to measure the brain's abilities.

I wanted to focus on how man has until recently, used traditional IQ tests to measure a brain's ability to prove how intelligent he is, when in fact these tests have since proven to be ineffectual as they do not measure the whole brain; far from it, apparently.

So I created two illustrations that mocked the idea of man portraying himself as more important than he perhaps is within the universe. The idea of man being as large as a universe was in fact, all in the mind and was ironic because man could not use his brain to measure the size of a brain. Thus, concluding that the brain may as well be the size of a universe.

Both illustrations used various mediums and processes. I used wire to create the man (with the shadow larger than himself, giving the perception that he is bigger than he actually is), old maps for the brain (mapping the brain), coloured inks to create the geometric brain shapes within the head. All hand created imagery was then scanned into Adobe Photoshop and developed further.

BOOK ILLUSTRATION

AND LAYOUT:

Double page spread designed for a book about Folklore. Each chapter focused on an area of the world; in this case England and the illustration supported one of the folklores associated with this country. I chose the poem Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti, as I felt it supported both the country of origin and the folklore and helped to tie the spread together. It is also one of my favourite poems as it ignites such strong imagery.

The illustration was created by hand, using pen and ink, watercolour, inks and coloured pencils. The book subtitle typeface is an Anglo Saxon font, with the initial ‘E’ created by hand, using pen and ink and scanned into Photoshop .

ALBUM COVER DESIGN:

(DIVERS by Joanna Newsom)

This cover was designed for a BA project.

I chose a newly released album and a non-mainstream artist, so that I would not be influenced by a well known, well copied, cover. I am also a fan of Joanna Newsom so it was a pleasure creating this cover.

Inspired by Joanna Newsom herself and her dedication to her art, I researched all of the hidden stories and poems linked to the album and was heavily inspired by these alone. The finished cover, whilst ethereal in communication, represents many of the stories within the album.

I used oil pastel to build up the cave painting type imagery, photography, pen and ink and digital software.

ALBUM COVER DESIGN:

FACE YOUR FEAR

by Santiago Street Machine

This cover was created for a competition to design an album cover, promoted through social media.

I used my own photography of street art, illustration and Adobe Photoshop to create it.

I used the concept of ' looking into the face of evil' and whilst doing so, I thought about what the devil would fear and concluded with the balance of good and evil; ying and yang. And this is where I came up with the two faces facing each other; almost as a mirror image.

LOGO DESIGN AND BRANDING

Product Catalogue front cover design for a global tea retailer. I used photographs of rose petals to create the soft background. The camellia garland is a pen drawing digitised and digitally coloured.

I used the hummingbird as a company brand because of the positive symbolism connected with this bird.

The logo was a design which evolved from images of water in a cup, as well as undulating hills where tea grows on the hillside.

POSTER DESIGN: ILLUSTRATION, LAYOUT AND TYPOGRAPHY

This poster design was a first year BA project, using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

I created a typeface. I created initials such as GD for graphic design, C for contemporary, for subliminal and visual effect.

I also created binoculars, to capture the viewer’s attention.

The typeface was based on an idea of a pen image I drew, of silk worms, in keeping with the venue for the event. But as the silk worms were not the ‘main event’, I made them more graphic and segmented. I turned them into letters of the alphabet, with graphic pens, scalpels and brushes attached.

I later used the same idea of my typeface, to create a complete alphabet so that I could use it for other projects.

INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE:

EDITORIAL DESIGN, ILLUSTRATION, PHOTOGRAPHY, LAYOUT AND TYPOGRAPHY

This interactive magazine article was produced using Adobe In-Design. I also used Photoshop where I needed to enhance the photos and create the illustration files from my hand drawn illustrations.

The background image was taken on a bright spring morning, spying on the egrets at Shapwick Heath.

The whole article is interactive with animation and video. However, I have only uploaded the screenshots of the article for viewing here.

This page was inspired by the many rhines criss crossing the flat wetland areas. They run like fosseways; roads running for miles, straight to the horizon.

The illustrations and photos are my own.

This page includes a photo montage, with interactive bird toggles.

This page was inspired by the background photo that I took of this beautiful view.

As the page opens, the words: Glastonbury Tor hovers on its own along the base of the Tor, before further text comes in from the left and right.

The birds are animated and run across the page bringing in the smaller photos and the Jerusalem paragraph.

All images were produced by me.

This page was inspired by my own experience of seeing a starling murmuration for the first time, as described in the text.

The illustrations of the birds, the pollarded willows and the background image are my own.

This final page was inspired by my love of the sounds on the Somerset Levels and the words to the song Birds by Elbow.

The Somerset Levels is all about connecting with the environment and using your senses to do this.

The illustrations and video on the right is my own. The only photo that isnt my own is of the bittern.

Try as I did, I could not photograph a bittern, but I did capture its booming cry in the video.
